About UsOur Story
Gender Spectrum works to create gender sensitive and inclusive environments for all children and teens.

Gender and Youth

Our society genders every aspect of our lives, narrowing our access and experience to so much of what the world has to offer. As a result, every child is constrained and the possibilities available to each limited.

Studies show that the gender stereotypes girls experience in childhood affects their work and earnings throughout adulthood, while the ways boys internalize traditional gender norms often confines them to a narrow set of emotions, interests, and ways of relating to others.

For transgender and gender-diverse youth the consequences of rigid gender norms can be even more troubling. Recent CDC data shows that 35% of transgender teens faced bullying at school and 27% felt unsafe going to or from school. The CDC also found that transgender youth face higher risks than cisgender teens for violence victimization, substance use, and suicide.

Our Approach

Our approach is to take the critical areas of children’s lives and work to bring greater gender understanding and inclusion. We focus on creating gender-inclusive spaces throughout the primary domains of all children’s lives. We start with the child, then radiate outwards, working with adults and institutions that affect all children to create gender-inclusive environments from birth through young adulthood.

Families have the first and greatest impact on children, so our connections with families are central to our work. We provide a wealth of online programs, resources and information that young people, parents and families can use to further their understanding of gender and learn the value of parental and adult support.

We also work with professionals, including educators, social service workers, faith leaders, medical and mental health professionals, government and business leaders and others who need support in navigating rapidly changing gender understandings. Our professional development and training services helps them achieve their objectives and discover an appreciation of the place gender has in everyone’s life.

Our Impact

Our Professional Development and Training programs have reached educators who work with more than 3.2 million children. In one year, we conducted trainings for more than 130 leading organizations of youth-serving professionals.

Our Online Groups and Programs reach adults and youth from more than 20 countries and all 50 states.

Every year we provide resources, referrals and support to hundreds of families and youth.
